Haiti earth quake - Non school uniform day
HaitiI am sure that the current media coverage of the Haiti earth quake has not failed to evoke a range of emotions and unanswered questions, not least why do these disasters happen to the poorest areas of the world?

As a Church School we feel strongly that we should act and help our neighbour in need in some way.

On Friday 29th of January, we held a non-uniform day and raised a massive £968.14!!!

It is important that we share the reasons why we are organising this with our children and ensure they become aware of the bible’s teaching and global issues. During worship our thoughts and prayers have, and will continue, to reinforce the messages of hope and peace for the Haitian people. The words of the poem below certainly convey this.

When the song of the angels is stilled
When the star in the sky is gone
When the Kings and Princes are home
When the Shepard’s are back with their flocks
The work of Christmas begins

To find the lost
To heal the broken
To feed the hungry
To release the prisoner
To rebuild the nations
To bring peace among the people
To make music in the heart

Howard Thomas

Life in Wales Today Home/School Project
Welsh DragonWe ask for your support for another very special piece of work to be undertaken by all pupils in the School. We would like the children to create something with a focus on ‘Life in Wales Today’ – but with a special reference to the issues of Environmental Concern, History, Flora and Fauna, Welsh Language and Culture, Sport, the Church in Wales and the ever changing face of Wales and in particular of Cardiff.

Life in Wales today can be explored through art, poetry, descriptive writing or perhaps by making a model or structure. Each pupil can develop this theme and bring something in to school to share with their fellow pupils and teachers. We would like to display projects as previously by the February half-term.

Of course, this is a Home/School Project, so we hope that other family members will become involved to support each pupil in completing their task.

This is something you can enjoy together.

Christmas Fair
FairThe School Christmas Fair was a very enjoyable event and raised more than £2,500 for school funds. Your kindness and generosity is much appreciated. There was a wide variety of stalls, with many games and competitions – everyone who attended had a great time including Santa!
Marie Curie Pots of Care Appeal
daffsDue to the wonderful response to last year’s appeal our school is taking part once again to support charity.

During this week each child will bring home a daffodil planting kit which should bloom in time for Marie Curie’s main appeal day in March. Donations will then be collected and your child could then give the plant to someone as a special gift.

- Place the compost disk into a water tight container, add half a litre of warm water and leave to soak for about 2 minutes then plant the bulb.

In addition to this all our children will take part in an art competition to design a ‘pot wrapper’ prior to the appeal day. A selection of entries will be judged nationally – let us hope we have a winning design in 2010!!!

Thank you for your support and happy growing!

Road Safety Week Competition
trafficThis week is Road Safety Week and to highlight the importance of being safe on the roads we have organised poster competitions to help drive home the important messages.

For Reception, Years 1, 2, & 3 the children are asked to design and colour a poster about one of the following themes:

• Wearing a helmet when riding a bike.
• Wearing bright coloured clothing. Be safe, be seen.
• Stop, Look, and Listen.
• Find a safe place to cross.

The only rule that the poster must be on A4 paper/card and returned to Mr Johns by Tuesday 1st of December. The winning entries will receive a Road Safety Goodie Bag and a selection of posters will be displayed on the school web-site.

For years 4, 5, 6, we have teamed up with Cardiff road safety team to design a banner that is to be displayed at the Hendre school entrance. The theme is to be bout the school dangers of parking and driving up Hendre Close during the school drop off and pick up times. Your banner must be 3 sheets of A4 paper, put together landscape and must be 2D. Your banner must have a catchy slogan and bright eye-catching pictures. The banners will be sent to the road safety team to be judged and the winning design will be made into a banner for the Hendre Close entrance.

Please ensure names and classes are put on the back of all posters and banners.

Here are some websites that may help you when designing your banner:

www.trafficclub.co.uk

We look forward to seeing your designs next week.

South Wales Fire Service
Fire engineSouth Wales Fire Service and South Wales Police have visited the school in recent weeks. The police brought two magnificent horses and we were all amazed by their behaviour, keeping calm and still even when the children had been asked to make as much noise as possible.
